True Life Produces Precious Moments
“O you afflicted one,
Tossed with tempest, and not comforted,
Behold, I will lay your stones with colorful gems,
And lay your foundations with sapphires.
I will make your pinnacles of rubies,
Your gates of crystal,
And all your walls of precious stones.…”
TEMPEST: A violent windy storm.
Does life ever feel like a violent and windy storm? Do you ever feel out of control and like there is no progress in your life? Why does it feel like more of our lives are spent worrying than resting? Our lives often work themselves into these places of constant struggle and lack of rest. We feel a need to figure too much of life out. Yes, we want to be well organized and have direction for where we’re going, but there is a lack of trust for the process.
What do I mean? Today, image is everything. It’s all about, “What will he or she think about me if I do this or that?” We buy stuff, we watch movies, we listen to music and podcasts, and even take on jobs just because it makes us look good in the eyes of those around us. I’ve even seen people take on careers just because it meets a financial need in their lives. Is it wrong? No. Is it right? Also, no.
I see life like it’s this big gift freely given to us, almost like its a giant chunk of cash. Let’s go big and picture life as one trillion dollars cash that’s been gifted to you to use however you want. Now imagine you choose to spend it by buying things you neither want or need but the people around you enjoy. You take this giant gift and spend it on all these people around you that you hardly know. Not even people that are needy, just people that are “cool” that you feel a need to look or be like.
People that give themselves the freedom to be one of a kind will find their way out of a tempest. The waves of the storm are around you but no longer guide you. A good sailor doesn’t fight the storm but uses the storm to push him towards his goal. Living to please people around you is the most directionless way of life their is. Rather than YOU deciding where you’re going to go (how it should be), culture and the “waves” around you make that decision. It’s never bad to have people that you admire and look up to, but you can’t become someone that already exists. You can tell when someone has a lack of inspiration, and you can also tell when someone is trying too hard to be exactly like someone. You have desires inside you that are unique to who you are and you need to let those be expressed. Who you become will be a combination of the way you’ve been inspired by outside sources and the ideas that are unique to you.
Don’t waste the biggest gift you’ll ever get on other people. There are times and seasons that will be laid down for others, but theres a difference between laying down your desires to bless someone, and giving up on yourself to please someone. This is the storm or “tempest” that I feel so many people can never make their way out of. In their lack of trust for the process, they miss out on the precious moments of life. There are many precious things that we fight for in life, but there are also many precious things that come when we stop fighting and let go.
So, this storm of culture that you may feel like you’re caught in may feel like its tearing you apart, but it’s time you find your direction and use the storm to drive you forward. On the other side of the storm you will find so many precious jewels that it has produced in you.
Forcing ourselves to do something that goes against the grain of who we are, keeps us in a storm that doesn’t produce anything but discouragement.
Trusting the process produces jewels in our lives. When you think about yourself and your desires, what really makes you come alive on the inside? For me, it’s doing this. Writing about topics and subjects that I’m passionate about. I love to look at culture and observe the areas we’ve gone right and wrong. I love to exercise, and I love to be a listening ear for friends. These are the things I genuinely enjoy. So why would I waste my time and energy doing things I don’t enjoy to be “cool”. Maybe the things I enjoy aren’t the most trendy things for a ___ year old, but I don’t mind. People can think what they want of me. I have a direction for my life, and I don’t plan to live in a constant storm. Life may feel like a storm for a season, having to use the opinion of others as motivation. Not trying to be like someone else is so uncommon in our day that you may feel ostracized by others, but if you can persevere you will end up much happier than the ones who spent their time trying to match or equal someone else. You will look back on your past and see the precious moments or jewels that have been produced by your perseverance.
Where do we go from here?
1. Stop leaving placing your destiny in the hands of others opinions.
Whether they share it with you or not, everyone will have an opinion about what you do in life. Some opinions will be good and some will not. We can’t continue to be held up waiting on the approval of others to step into our destiny. Trust your desires.
2. Stop fighting the storm, and use it as motivation.
When someone does have a bad opinion about the things you’re doing, don’t fight back. Either ignore it, or put it in the back of your mind to use as motivation to get to your goal.
3. Don’t give up, trust the process.
You will face moments that giving up on your dreams seems more logical than pursuing them. DON’T DO IT. The more hard times your persevere through the greater your success will be. The hard times might get harder, but the yes to keep on going gets easier.
